ABOUT KAWAMBWA TEA

The tea estate started as a Government tea growing pilot project in 1969 but it was commercialized and incorporated as a State-Owned Company in 1975 while the tea processing factory was commissioned in 1976. The government established tea company was setup for purposes of promoting self-reliance through import substitution, enhancing food security, creating employment opportunities for the surrounding communities, supporting poverty reduction initiatives, and accelerating social infrastructure development.

In 2015 the Industrial Development Corporation (“IDC”) was mandated by the government to rehabilitate, modernize and expand the estate. The tea estate is located in Kawambwa District of Luapula Province in Zambia at latitude 9° 45’ South and longitude 9°17’ East with a mean altitude of 1,240 metres above sea level. The estate comprises a 423 Ha tea plantation while the eucalyptus wood fuel tree plantation covers a further 180 hectares out of a total farmland area of 1,500 hectares.
